These would need to determine that such early experiences influence future neuroticism when early measures of neuroticism are controlled and rule out relevant confounds, such as shared genetic influences between the experience and neuroticism. It is essential that future studies of causal environmental influences on neuroticism not be conducted in isolation, however, but take the interplay of genes and environments fully into consideration (Johnson, 2007; Robinson, 2004).
