compared respondents rating their stress as severe (9–10), serious (7–8), moderate (5–6) or mild (3–4) to those who did not rate it as stressful (0–2). Such approaches lead to stronger associations between life events and mental health in the general stress literature (Dohrenwend 2006), but this approach has been used in only a few studies in research on discrimination and health.
