Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that occurs after experiencing a traumatic event [1]. Approximately 50-89% of the United States population is exposed to some type of traumatic event during their lifetime [2, 3]; however, only 6–8% of the population is diagnosed with PTSD [1]. This may be due to different factors that contribute to risk for or resilience to developing PTSD, such as socio-demographic characteristics (e.g., female gender), comorbid mental health problems (e.g., alcohol use disorders), and genetic liability [4–8].
