symptoms (Safren & Heimberg, 1999) as well as suicidality (Plöderl & Fartacek, 2005). In a nationally representative study of adolescents, there was a partial reduction in the relationship between same-sex attraction and suicidality when general psychological processes (including hopelessness) were statistically controlled (Russell & Joyner, 2001), providing partial support for mediation. No studies have examined hopelessness as a mediator of the relationship between specific stigma-related stressors (e.g., discrimination experiences) and internalizing symptoms, an important area for future research on the cognitive processes that are created by stigma-related stress.
