The presence of an either an AUD or SUD increases the probability that the other substance-related condition will develop (Goldstein et al., 2012; Stinson et al., 2005; Teeson et al., 2010). Comorbid SUDs and AUDs are associated with an earlier onset and greater number of problems for each disorder, lower life achievement, more medical and psychiatric problems, greater cognitive impairments, more violence, a greater likelihood of seeking treatment, and early death (Booth et al., 2010; Compton et al., 2003, 2006; Di Forti et al., 2012; Heil et al., 2001; Herrero et al., 2007; Moore et al., 2007; Neumark et al., 2000; Schuckit et al., in press; Shaffer and Eber, 2002; Stenbacka et al., 2010; Teeson et al., 2010).
