12–17, 18% of European Americans compared to 10% of African American youth reported using alcohol in the past 30 days. Moreover, 42% of European Americans compared to only 34% of African Americans reported consuming at least one alcoholic beverage in their lifetime (SAMHSA, 2010). African American youth also report higher rates of abstinence compared to European American youth (Bachman et al., 1991; SAMHSA, 2010, 2011; Wallace et al., 2003b).
