Measures derive largely from the Semi-Structured Assessment of the Genetics of Alcoholism (SSAGA; Bucholz et al., 1994; Hesselbrock et al., 1999), a semi-structured interview developed for the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (Begleiter et al., 1995). The SSAGA has well-documented validity (Hesselbrock et al., 1999), with excellent retest and inter-rater reliability (Bucholz et al., 1994, 1995). Parents completed a telephone adaptation of the SSAGA-II—the DSM-IV update to the DSM-IIIR-based SSAGA. Twins completed either the child or adolescent version of the SSAGA-II, also adapted for telephone administration.
