The sample was recruited from an active panel of adults who were participating in Survey Sampling International (Shelton, CT), a research sampling company that provides potential survey sample participants for university-based and other types of survey research. Survey Sampling International maintains web panels of potential research participants matched to U.S. Census demographics from all geographic regions of the United States who are invited to participate in web surveys. Eligible panel participants for this study were stratified based on sex and age categories within the U.S. Census breakdown of the population. Potential participants received a general invitation from Survey Sampling International stating that they were eligible to participate in a survey. Those interested clicked on a link that took them to a website at the Medical University of South Carolina that contained the National Stressful Events Survey. This web survey, which was programmed using the Research Electronic Data Capture system (Harris, Thielke, Taylor, Gonzalez, & Conde, 2009), contained an introduction and checkbox for the participant to indicate that he or she was 18 years old or older and that they agreed
