Importantly, Wulff and colleagues recently showed that the theta/gamma interactions depend on a particular class of GABAergic interneurons [38]. They used genetically-modified mice to show that synaptic inhibition onto parvalbumin-positive cells is critical for regulating theta/gamma interactions. These findings were supported by similar results within a computational model of the hippocampal CA1 region [38].
