The study sample consisted of 352 adolescents, ages 13–17 years who were psychiatrically hospitalized for suicide ideation or attempt, at baseline, at either a university (n = 99) or private hospital (n = 253). The participating adolescents were predominately female (71.9%) with a mean age of 15.6 years (SD = 1.3). The racial/ethnic distribution was 86.5% Caucasian, 5.9% Black, and 7.6% other race/ethnicity. Eleven percent of participants were in families receiving public assistance. Regarding parental education: 10.2% of mothers and 10.1% of fathers had graduate/professional degrees, 19.5% of mothers and 14.7% of fathers had college degrees, 39.9% of mothers and 32.7% of fathers had some college education, 30.4% of mothers and 42.4% of fathers had high school degrees or less education.
