exploratory analyses collapsing total past year stressful life events into four stress categories (interpersonal problems or loss, job problems or loss, financial problems, and legal- or crime-related stress) did not demonstrate a differential pattern of results from our initial analysis. However, the financial problems category contained only two stress items so we lost the ability to detect an association between financial stress and transitions in past year SUD diagnoses. Thus, depending on the characterization and timing of stress, women and men may be differentially vulnerable to the development or maintenance of substance use, and this is important to consider in future studies.
