To calculate the burden associated with the second pathway of shifting severity, we used the odds ratio (OR) from Foti et al[52] of psychotic symptoms of 1.64 (95% CIs: 1.12-2.34) in people with schizophrenia who regularly use cannabis compared to those who do not. We converted the ORs to their RR equivalents based on the prevalence of exposure to regular cannabis use and the percent of time with psychosis (as opposed to residual state). The percent of time spent in acute psychosis was 63% (38%-82%) based on a meta-analysis of 6 studies covering 5 GBD world regions[49].
