In STAGE, lifetime history of DSM-IV-TR (American Psychiatric Association, 2000) MDD was considered present if, during the same two week period, 1) the participant indicated the presence of at least five of the following: depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, significant weight change or appetite change, insomnia or hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation or retardation, fatigue, feeling worthless or full of guilt, problems concentrating, and suicidal ideation, with either depressed mood or loss of interest in nearly all activities most of the day endorsed; and 2) the participant indicated that the symptoms caused significant impairment or distress.
