Text

AO and AI were assessed during the final assessment. The following question assessed AO: “Not including drinking as part of religious ceremonies, at what age did you take your first drink on your own rather than just a sip from an adult's glass?” For AI, participants indicated the age at which they “first got drunk after drinking alcohol.” Response options included ≤9, 10 to 12, 13 to 15,16,17, 18, 19, and ≥ 20 years of age. To facilitate interpretation, values were recoded to 9, 11, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 years of age. Correlations between the original and recoded measures were 0.97 and 0.98. Delay was calculated by subtracting AO from AI.
