Prior work has contrasted the contributions of varying definitions of craving on AUD diagnosis (Keyes et al., 2011); the NESARC includes two items that effectively separate “strong desire or urge” from “couldn’t think about anything else” with the former being more commonly reported in population samples than the latter. However, “strong desire” is incorporated into the International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) diagnosis of AUD (Yoshimura et al., 2016) and is part of the phrasing of the corresponding DSM-5 item. Therefore, our single item adequately captures the phenomenon of craving, although future studies might wish to explore alternative conceptualizations of the construct.
