It is possible that multiple locations in a gene could have various forms that lead to differential function of that gene contributing to differential susceptibility to an outcome (McClellan & King 2010). Today it would be nearly impossible to publish a paper in a genetics journal without saying something about the coverage of the gene provided by the set of genotyped markers (Pettersson et al. 2009).
