Bulk RNA sequencing (RNAseq) cannot provide unambiguous species resolution from a mixed population.22, 23 Thus, species-specific decomposition is needed after sequencing but before analysis. Single-cell sequencing technologies provide detailed information about the heterogeneity of the cellular mixture but this technique remains expensive, less sensitive, and noisier compared with traditional bulk RNAseq.24 Moreover, despite the rapid growth of single-cell level sequencing, the majority of available public databases are based on bulk RNAseq.
