These beliefs, coupled with gaps in psychiatrists’ knowledge base, make it unsurprising that very few psychiatrists refer patients for genetic testing or counseling (80% of psychiatrists ordered no genetic tests from 2002–2006, according to Hoop et al. (2008b)); 71% of respondents in the Finn et al. survey (2005) had not referred patients for genetic counseling in 2001.
