OUD is a chronic disorder which can be lifelong. During the trajectory of the disease, a wide array of physical or psychiatric complications may occur, which makes it challenging to fully understand their relationships with OUD. To better understand the genetic underpinnings of OUD and its complications, we evaluated common genetic factors between OUD and a series of clinical conditions, including mental disorders, pain phenotypes and personality traits. Several moderate correlations were identified, including depressive symptoms and pain phenotypes, again consistent with known correlates of OUD. Depression increases the risk of OUD among patients with chronic pain(Sullivan, 2018), but our results suggesting that these conditions may share, in part, common genetic etiologies. Furthermore, insomnia, another common condition among individuals with opioid use disorder(Serdarevic et al., 2017), also demonstrated a genetic correlation with OUD in this cohort.
