week when alcohol was not administered. Rats exhibited a short (approximately 1 to 2 hour) period of acute alcohol intoxication immediately following each ip injection. Peak blood alcohol levels, measured 1 hour after ip alcohol injection in 4 alcohol naïve animals not included in subsequent experiments averaged 308 mg/dl, consistent with published reports of peak BAL in rats after a 3 g/kg ip alcohol administration (Nation et al., 1993). Necropsy performed on each animal revealed no apparent internal injuries from ip alcohol injections. Abdominal organs of alcohol-treated animals appeared normal by gross inspection.
