Within the basolateral amygdala, FAAH activity is found to be rapidly induced by stress, which results in a decline in AEA content within this structure (Hill et al., 2009c). The functional role of this decline, with respect to the HPA axis, was highlighted by the finding that local administration of a FAAH inhibitor into the basolateral amygdala (but not the central or medial nuclei of the amygdala) attenuated activation of the HPA axis in response to stress (Hill et al., 2009c).
