IBD includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, two chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. A recent systematic review described high rates of anxiety and depression in patients with IBD compared with healthy controls, particularly when the disease was active; children were also at increased risk of developing psychiatric comorbidities after IBD onset (Mikocka-Walus et al. 2016). While there may be etiological distinctions between childhood- and adult-onset IBD, the limited number of cases in the OCGAS cohort prevented any meaningful subgroup analysis. While our data do not support an association between IBD and OCD, larger population-based studies or multisite clinical registries are required given the low population frequency of individuals with both conditions.
