Subjects with schizophrenia, aged 18–60 years who were physically, neurologically and endocrinologically healthy and had normal laboratory values (routine blood tests, biochemical tests including thyroid stimulating hormone, lipid profile, liver and kidney parameters) and electrocardiogram were eligible to enter the study. Patients in acute psychosis, on clozapine treatment or declaring suicidal tendencies were excluded from the study.
