The content of subtype profiles often depends on the range of attributes that researchers decide to consider when making distinctions among alcoholics. Two prominent subtyping studies (Schuckit et al. 1969; Cloninger 1987) brought gender differences into consideration and expanded on earlier typological approaches that had tended to emphasize differences in drinking patterns.
