Kirby et al first reported that hepatic CYP2A may regulate lipid metabolism (ref.29). Recently it was found that fatty acids can induce CYP2A in hepatocytes (ref.30–31). Previously, we found that CYP2A protects against alcoholic fatty liver (ref.11–12). In this study, we identified an association of CYP2A6 gene with obesity in human subjects. In animal experiments, we found that obesity and hepatic steatosis was more severe in cyp2a5−/− mice than in cyp2a5+/+ mice, suggesting that CYP2A protects against obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver.
