For example, for 25% of the variants in European Americans that GWAS have identified as being associated with body mass index, type 2 diabetes and lipid levels, the strength of the association differs in at least one out of five populations of non-European ancestry4. This means that a variant that is associated with diabetes may confer a different risk of disease in someone of European ancestry than in, say, an individual of African ancestry.
