Forty-three BXD strains were subjected to acute restraint stress (15 min) followed by alcohol (1.8 g kg−1 i.p.) or saline injection according to the standard operating procedure for Integrative Neuroscience Initiative on Alcoholism (INIA) (https://www.iniastress.org/sop.html). Mice were allocated into five groups: RSE (restraint stress followed by ethanol), RSS (restraint stress followed by saline), NOE (no stress followed by ethanol), NOS (no stress followed by saline) and NON (no stress and no injections, baseline control). For the RSE and RSS groups, mice were placed in an immobilization tube for 15 min and then injected with either ethanol or saline (12.5% v/v, 1.8 g kg−1), and returned to home cages. For the NOE and NOS groups, mice were injected with ethanol or saline control without restraint treatment. Four hours after treatment, mice were killed and tissues were processed as described below.
