Therefore, allelic scores indexing CRP which are based on this GWAS meta-analysis will also show association with type 2 diabetes even though the direction of causation may be from the disease to the biological intermediate. The point we do stress is that our method is useful for flagging putative causal relationships across potentially thousands of biological intermediates, and we recommend following up interesting associations by e.g. formal Mendelian Randomization analysis, randomized controlled trials, mechanistic studies etc.
