The cluster of BMI-associated FTO SNPs in East Asian populations is very similar to that of European ancestry populations (Figure 1 b). Three large-scale GWAS in East Asian populations (Korean23, Chinese24, Japanese25) each identified different FTO SNPs (rs9939609, rs17817449, rs12149832, respectively) as the most significantly associated with BMI, all of which are highly correlated (r2 > 0.90) in East Asian as well as in European ancestry populations (Figure 1b).
