Future studies in humans using more localized recording techniques, e.g., via microwires (Fried et al., 1997), in combination with novel computer-assisted localization techniques of electrode contacts (Ekstrom et al., 2008) may help to further elicit the generating mechanisms and interplay of these rhythms and their functional relevance for mnemonic processing at the single neuron level.
