Participants were 487 adolescents from 292 families taking part in an ongoing, prospective, high-risk study. The MLS is following a community sample of families of men charged with drunk driving who met criteria for alcohol use disorder (AUD), their son, and their son’s biological mother whose AUD status could vary. A community contrast sample of families drawn from the same neighborhoods was also recruited. These families comprised both low-risk (i.e., no history of SUD) and moderate-risk (i.e., AUD-diagnosed men without criminal conviction of drunk driving) families. Full biological siblings were also included if they were within 8 years of the male target child. Due to original recruitment strategies, the sample was predominantly male (342, 70.24%) and of European American ancestry (398, 81.72%). See Zucker and colleagues (1996; 2000) for a full description of the sample and study procedures.
