The severity of alcohol dependence was assessed using the alcohol use disorders identification test (AUDIT) [33] and Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) [34]. To determine the duration of problematic drinking, each AUD patient was asked to calculate the number of years they had been experiencing issues with alcohol. Additionally, in order to ensure score reliability, a similar question regarding duration was posed to a family member of each participant. A smoking questionnaire (Fagerstrom test of nicotine dependence, FTND) helped determine the amount and frequency of AUD patients’ cigarette use.
