As shown in item characteristic curves (ICCs) that considered item-level discrimination and severity estimates simultaneously (Fig. 2a–2e), withdrawal (particularly for cannabis and cocaine dependence) and time using were among the most severe symptoms of the IRT-defined latent trait problems (shifted to right side); taking larger amounts was among the least severe indicators and was accompanied by a high level of discrimination estimates for all substances (steep lines).
