Text

Participants were assessed for depressive disorder and anxiety disorder (generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobia, social anxiety disorder) in the research clinic at age 18 years (mean age 17 years and 9 months (SD 4 months) using the computerised version of the clinical interview schedule-revised.25 This derives diagnosis according to criteria from the international classification of diseases, 10th revision. Agreement between the self administered computerised version and the interviewer administered versions of the clinical interview schedule-revised is close.26 27 28 Sixty nine per cent of those with information on self harm with and without suicidal intent at age 16 years attended the clinic at age 18 years (n=3313/4799). We excluded from the analysis the 114 participants who completed the clinical interview schedule-revised less than six months after the self harm questionnaire at age 16 years.
