Parental conflict was determined by participant responses to the questions “how often did your parents fight or argue in front of you?” and “how much conflict and tension was there between your parents?” Both questions focused on the period when the participant was aged 6 – 13. Participants reporting parents ‘sometimes’ or ‘always’ fought or argued or ‘a lot’ or ‘some’ conflict/tension were coded as experiencing high parental conflict.
