that for both DLGAP1 and GRIK2 we identified more then 160 interactors each, thus indicating they are highly connected nodes (hubs) in the interactome. Earlier findings have suggested that only genes that are essential in (early) development (“essential genes”) tend to encode hub proteins, while the vast majority of disease genes are nonessential and show no tendency to encode hub proteins 55. This might point to DLGAP1 and GRIK2 as being essential genes in early (neuro-)development. However, more studies are warranted to confirm this hypothesis.
