In summary, detailed, on-going prospective, longitudinal assessment of these domains over a period of ten years in a diverse, nationwide sample of youth in the United States presents an unprecedented opportunity to examine the risk and protective factors influencing the onset and sequela of substance use and its consequences, the impact of detailed patterns of substance use (including co-use and polydrug use) on neurocognitive development, health and psychosocial outcomes, and to further understand the timing and interactive relationship between substance use and psychopathology in youth that live in the United States.
