The assembly forming/segregating ability of interneurons may be due to the efficient synapses formed between pyramidal cells and interneurons (Csicsvari et al., 1998; Galarreta and Hestrin, 2001; Geiger et al., 1997; Gulyas et al., 1993; Maurer et al., 2006b; Miles 1990; Thomson et al., 2002) and strong inhibitory interneuron-pyramidal cell connections (Cobb et al., 1995; Pouille and Scanziani, 2001), relative to the typically weak synapses linking principal cells (Miles 1990).
