The GRS was not associated with whether individuals initiated smoking or with the timing of initiation (relative risk (RR) for smoking initiation=0.98, 95% CI [0.95-1.02], cumulative hazard ratio (HR) for initiation=1.01, [0.94-1.09] based on a one-unit increase in GRS z-score, Table 1). Subsequent analyses focused on the 627 Dunedin cohort members who initiated smoking at some point during follow-up (Figure 2).
