While MR and GR share virtually identical DNA binding domains, their transactivation domains are distinct, meaning that they can have very different gene targets (Datson et al., 2001, 2008). Moreover, there is evidence that the two receptors heterodimerize (Trapp et al., 1994; Nishi et al., 2004), a process that introduces the capacity to temper specific MR and GR genomic signals and perhaps introduce new types of genomic interactions.
