Text

GWA approaches of increasing sophistication have been developed and used to identify the specific genes and genomic variants that predispose to vulnerability to substance dependence. For example, we have assembled a group of research volunteers from the Molecular Neurobiology Branch of the NIH (NIDA) intramural research program in Baltimore between 1990 and 2008 ("MNB"). We have compared allele frequencies at ca 1500, 10,000, 100,000, 500,000 and then 1,000,000 SNP markers in increasing numbers of substance dependent vs control individuals from this growing sample, including 680 substance dependent or control individuals with self reported European ancestries [6-9,11], (Drgon et al, submitted).
