Text

A total of 48 slides were presented. Thirty-six color slides, depicting a variety of events, were selected from the International Affective Picture System-IAPS (Center for the Study of Emotion and Attention (CSEA-NIMH), 1995). Twelve were selected from each of three valence categories of positive, neutral, and negative. Positive and negative slides were selected from the high arousal (interest) and neutral from the low arousal category. Our slides were selected based on their use in other studies demonstrating valence effects (Cuthbert et al., 1996; Greenwald, Bradley, Cuthbert, & Lang, 1998; Nitschke et al., 2002; Patrick, Berthot, & Moore, 1996; Bradley, Cuthbert, & Lang, 1996). An additional 12 slides related specifically to smoking cues were also presented and consisted of cues such as a burning cigarette in an ashtray, people smoking alone or in a social context, a pack of cigarettes, etc. (Carter et al., 2006).
