An important step toward prevention and treatment of heavy drinking and alcohol use disorders (AUDs) comes through increasing our understanding of characteristics that contribute to developing alcohol-related problems (Conrod et al., 2001; Schuckit et al., 2016). Gaining such knowledge is challenging because alcohol-related diagnoses are complex conditions that reflect both genetic and environmental influences (Reilly et al., 2017; Schuckit, 2018).
