Alternatively, the lack of association in the earlier study may have reflected its slightly different grouping of race/ethnic groups. In the current study, bivariate associations determined the decision to combine Native Americans with non-Hispanic whites to form the reference group against which all others combined were evaluated. In sum, differences between the current study and our earlier cross-sectional study of recovery reflect numerous differences in sample definition, observation period and measurement and indicate the importance of considering these aspects of study design in the interpretation of findings.
