The use of alcohol, drugs, and associated life problems are common in the U.S. Eighty percent of men and women have consumed alcohol, and almost half have taken an illicit drug (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMSHA], 2003). While most users do not develop repetitive problems, heavy intake of each substance carries risks for medical and psychiatric problems, and 5% to 20% of users across drug types develop an alcohol- or drug-use disorder (AUD or SUD) (Kessler et al., 2005; Schuckit, 2006a; Teeson et al., 2010; Wagner and Anthony, 2002).
