The 1993 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Revitalization Act mandates the inclusion of racial and ethnic minorities in federally funded biomedical research.6 However, fulfilling this mandate has proven problematic, even as evidence accumulates that race and ethnicity play an important role in disease risk as well as in responses to environmental exposures and drug therapies.
