These observations led to a reinterpretation of the function of these waveforms, whereby the ERN and the CRN reflect the detection of conflict following responses rather than overt errors (Carter et al. 1998; Gehring and Fencsik 2001). Even though these potentials originate from the same cortical areas and appear to have the same function, it is clear from the diverse findings in the literature that they are differentially sensitive to other underlying processes (Luu et al. 2000a, b; Bartholow et al. 2005; van Veen and Carter 2006; Hewig et al. 2007; Taylor et al. 2007; Segalowitz and Dywan 2009).
