Text

In the absence of more reliable measures (for instance diagnostic tests) in more heterogeneous complex traits – including many psychiatric and neurological diseases – researchers have obtained promising results by selecting more homogeneous subgroups of patients such as responders to lithium treatment in BD [34], or early illness onset in Alzheimer’s disease [35]. This strategy can significantly decrease the number of cases to collect for adequately powered genetic studies.
