Chunk #33 — Materials and Methods — Using pedigree information to improve phase, infer recombination events and detect genotyping error — Detecting recombination events
We applied this method separately to all the individuals in each of the eight cohorts. We then compared the regions where our HMM detected a recombination event to the recombination locations found in Merlin's output (the Viterbi solution to the Lander-Green algorithm). To reliably detect recombination events, a Lander-Green implementation requires either a nuclear family with at least three children or a three generation pedigree [39], [40]. Hence we only evaluate meioses that meet these criteria in the real data sets, referring to these as informative meioses.
