Participants in this study were recruited via schools, newspaper ads, and flyers that were placed at after-school programs and preschools. Prior to being selected to participate in the study, parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach, 1991a, 1991b). Achenbach’s program was used to compute his “T scores” (see Achenbach, 1991a, 1991b). All children with T scores of 60 or higher on either internalizing or externalizing problems were chosen for participation (many were above 60 on one scale but not the other). In addition, all children who had T scores below 60 on both the internalizing and externalizing scales were included in the sample and were matched as closely as possible in regard to sex, social class (on the basis of parental education and occupation), age, and race. This process resulted in the recruitment of 214 children with a range of CBCL scores (rather than groups of children). Participants received $25 at the first assessment and $30 at the other assessments.
